xAI Raises $10 Billion for the Development of the Grok AI and Scaling of the Colossus Data Center

xAI залучила $10 млрд для розвитку Grok і розширення дата-центру Colossus

The startup xAI, founded by Elon Musk, has announced the raising of $10 billion in the form of investments and debt financing aimed at scaling its infrastructure, further developing the Grok chatbot, and expanding the Colossus data center.

Investments and Strategic Goals of xAI

The funding includes $5 billion in secured debt and another $5 billion in strategic investments. A significant portion of the capital raised will be directed towards the development of data centers, particularly for scaling the Colossus supercomputer in Tennessee. The company is also allocating substantial resources to enhance its own AI model, Grok, which is positioned as an independent alternative to other market players.

It is known that Colossus already utilizes over 200,000 graphics processors, and Musk has previously stated his intention to increase the supercomputer’s capacity to one million GPUs. To achieve this, xAI is actively collaborating with technology giants such as Nvidia and AMD, continuously acquiring cutting-edge chips for its AI systems.

Grok and Competition in the AI Market

The new financial support allows xAI to accelerate the development of Grok and compete more effectively with industry leaders — OpenAI and Anthropic. Grok 3, presented in February 2025, is already integrated into the social network X (formerly Twitter), which xAI acquired in March as part of a $33 billion deal. The latest valuation of the company reached $80 billion, but it is currently unknown whether this has changed after the new investment round. Last year, the startup raised $6 billion at a valuation of $50 billion.

xAI’s debt placement, according to Morgan Stanley, was “oversubscribed,” indicating high demand from global investors. Experts note an increasing interest in infrastructure AI platforms in the U.S., where competition among private companies is becoming increasingly fierce.

xAI’s main competitor — OpenAI — recently closed an investment round at a record $40 billion with a valuation of $300 billion. Anthropic has also strengthened its position, receiving a valuation of $61.5 billion in March and opening a five-year credit line of $2.5 billion in May 2025. The majority of the funding is directed towards chip procurement and data center development.

Musk positions Grok as an “unawakened” model focused on truth and publicly criticizes competitors for ideological censorship. His conflict with OpenAI intensified after his proposal in February to acquire the company for $97.4 billion — an initiative that Sam Altman rejected

Previously, Musk accused OpenAI of straying from its original mission in favor of profit, contrary to its declared non-profit principles.
