Reaction to the scandal surrounding Base
On April 16, 2025, the team behind the L2 network Base published a post on the social network Zora, which allows messages to be converted into meme coins, titled Base is for everyone. This led to a significant increase in the value and market capitalization of the network; however, both metrics sharply declined later, prompting widespread criticism.
Cohen’s comments on trends in the crypto market
“I think there is a reality in which what Base did will be the norm in a few years. But not today. And it has caused harm. I am a strong proponent of the idea of “tokenizing everything,” but you cannot ignore the current market realities — if you launch a token and have social influence, you bear a certain responsibility”.
According to Cohen, formal standards are not set by individual participants but by the community, and they need to be respected and adhered to. He emphasizes that their team will continue experimenting in the fields of social media and tokenization, even if some of these experiments may cause user dissatisfaction.
“We will continue to conduct experiments at the intersection of social media and tokenization. Some of them (for example, live broadcasts, which are back in full swing!) will annoy users. But whatever we do, we will strive to meet our core audience. Don’t expect tokens from me, pump.fun, or any of our staff,” he added.
It was previously known that the pump.fun team temporarily disabled the live streaming feature due to its use for spreading inappropriate content. In February 2025, information emerged about the platform’s intentions to launch its own token using a Dutch auction model.
