How the Attack on Shibarium Occurred

The attacker exploited a vulnerability in the Shibarium bridge by signing a malicious contract, which allowed them to acquire 4.6 million BONE in a single transaction. This temporarily gave them control over the validators’ voting. The hacker gained access to the signing keys of the majority of validators—10 out of 12—except for K9 Finance and Unification, which did not support the suspicious transaction.

Taking advantage of this, the attacker withdrew a substantial amount of assets from the bridge, namely 224.57 ETH and 92.6 billion SHIB. These funds were also used to pay for a flash loan. Additionally, the hacker attempted to sell approximately $700,000 in KNINE tokens; however, these transactions were blocked after K9 Finance blacklisted the attacker’s address. Other tokens, including LEASH, ROAR, TREAT, BAD, and SHIFU, remained untouched.

Response Measures and Next Steps from the Shiba Inu Team

Following the attack, the Shiba Inu developers decided to temporarily suspend staking and unstaking functions, locking BONE that were already in a pending unstaking state. The team also announced plans to conduct a secure key change for the validators and to return the assets to the stake manager after verifying the integrity of the system.

“The team has reached out to law enforcement and is willing to negotiate with the attacker on the condition of a refund.”

In light of the news about the hack, the price of the BONE token surged sharply—from $0.17 to $0.37—representing an increase of nearly 125% in a short period.

Earlier, on September 8, 2025, the Swiss cryptocurrency exchange SwissBorg also fell victim to a hacking attack, losing $41 million in Solana.
