Apple is considering the use of generative artificial intelligence to enhance the chip development process that underpins its products such as the iPhone, Mac, and Vision Pro. This was announced by Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies, Johny Srouji, during an awards ceremony at the Belgian research center Imec.

Artificial Intelligence and New Opportunities for Chip Development

According to the company leader, the application of advanced electronic design automation (EDA) tools plays a key role in chip creation, starting from the A4 model to the latest developments. Currently, Apple aims to integrate artificial intelligence into these processes to significantly increase the volume of design tasks performed while reducing the time required.

The market for design automation solutions is dominated by companies Cadence and Synopsys, which are already implementing AI in their products. Srouji emphasized that collaboration with such partners is critical for realizing Apple’s complex initiatives in the chip sector. According to the executive, the company sees “huge potential” in generative artificial intelligence technologies for enhancing productivity and efficiency in development. This is particularly significant given the increasing complexity of chips and the growing demand for customized solutions.

Apple’s Strategic Decisions and Market Leadership

Srouji also reminded that in 2020, Apple took a bold step by completely transitioning from Intel processors to its own ARM chips in the Mac lineup. This transformation did not include any backup plan in case of failure and was accompanied by a massive overhaul of the company’s entire software infrastructure.

“We went all in. There was no backup plan,” Srouji stated.

He emphasized that such strategic risks allow Apple to maintain its leadership position among global technology companies. According to the vice president, the company plans to continue staying at the forefront of technological progress.
