Poland Becomes a Key Transit Hub for Ukrainian Scrap Metal

The market for scrap metal in Poland is demonstrating dynamic changes and stable growth in export volumes. In the past year, Poland exported a record 2.81 million tons of ferrous scrap, which is 3.2% more compared to 2023. The main export destinations remain Turkey, India, and Pakistan. In particular, shipments to Turkey increased by 130% compared to the previous year, reaching 529 thousand tons, and compared to 2022, this figure has nearly tripled.

Import of Scrap Metal to Poland: Trends and Sources

Despite the growth in exports, the volume of scrap metal imports to Poland in 2024 decreased by 15.3%, totaling 7.24 million tons. For comparison, in 2022, imports increased by 26.9% to 7.64 million tons, and in 2023, by another 12% to 8.55 million tons. The majority of imports come from European Union countries, which accounted for 6.91 million tons in 2024, a decrease of 10.7% from last year.

The Role of Ukraine in Scrap Supplies to Poland

The last two years have seen a significant increase in scrap metal imports to Poland from third countries. In 2024, this figure reached 265 thousand tons, which is 65.2% more than the previous year. The vast majority of this volume comes from Ukraine: imports from our country amounted to 251,030 tons, which is 57.4% more compared to the previous year. Forecasts for 2025 remain optimistic, as in the first quarter of the current year, 68,110 tons of raw materials were imported from Ukraine, while in the same period last year, this figure was 57 thousand tons.
