Ukraine Plans to Localize Gripen Fighter Production by 2033

Київ розраховує частково локалізувати виробництво шведських винищувачів Gripen до 2033 року.

Ukraine has begun active preparations for the large-scale localization of Swedish Gripen fighter production on its territory. According to Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal, the country plans to establish large-scale assembly of aircraft and production of individual components for this modern aviation technology by 2033.

Signing of Memorandum with Saab and Supply Plans

To implement this ambitious project, a memorandum has already been signed between the Ukrainian company and the Swedish manufacturer Saab. Ukraine insists that the first deliveries of fighters should begin as early as next year, which will significantly enhance the country’s defense capabilities.

“Ukraine plans to begin significant localization of Swedish Gripen fighter production by 2033, focusing on large-scale assembly and production of individual components. The minister added that a corresponding memorandum has already been signed between the Ukrainian company and the fighter manufacturer Saab regarding the future localization of Gripen. Overall, Ukraine insists that the delivery of aircraft should start next year.”

Financial Support from Sweden and New Areas of Cooperation

At the same time, the Swedish Ministry of Defense announced its readiness to finance part of a large deal for Ukraine to purchase up to 150 Gripen fighters. Additionally, Sweden has already presented this deal to the leaders of the Coalition of Willing countries, which may also participate in financing the supplies.

Besides aviation matters, the defense ministers of Ukraine and Sweden signed a Letter of Intent regarding partnership in defense innovations. This document will be an important step towards expanding cooperation in cutting-edge technologies and will facilitate Ukraine’s integration into the European innovation and industrial space. In particular, Kyiv has proposed to consider the possibility of joint development of surface-to-air missile interceptors and the production of modern radars.
