Block’s Inclusion in S&P 500: Market and Community Reaction

The news of Block’s addition to the S&P 500 index has generated significant excitement in the stock market and among crypto investors. The company’s shares (ticker XYZ) rose by 8.5% in pre-market trading, reaching $79. Block’s current market capitalization stands at $44.8 billion.

Analysts predict that Block’s inclusion in the S&P 500 will significantly boost demand for its securities from institutional investors. The cryptocurrency community also reacted positively to the news, as the company holds 8,584 bitcoins, actively integrates cryptocurrencies into its services, and adheres to its own bitcoin strategy.

“This is not just a headline. This is trillions in passive flows gradually moving towards bitcoin,” emphasized the Wise Advice account on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

Criteria for Inclusion in S&P 500 and Industry Outlook

Inclusion in the S&P 500 requires meeting strict financial criteria, including:

  • positive net income over four quarters according to GAAP;
  • market capitalization exceeding $18 billion;
  • sufficient liquidity levels.

Experts note that Block has long met these criteria. Back in January 2025, Matthew Siegel, head of digital research at VanEck, stated that the company should be the first public company with a bitcoin strategy to enter the index.

Analysts add that Block is often compared to Coinbase, which became the first cryptocurrency platform in the S&P 500 in May. Following that, the market watched to see who would be next, with many expecting Michael Saylor’s Strategy to join; however, Block has outpaced its competitors.

The cryptocurrency industry hopes for further expansion of its players’ presence in traditional financial indices.

Additionally, Dorsey’s company recently announced the launch of bitcoin payments in its Square division. The Lightning Network protocol will be used for instant transactions, and a demonstration of the technology took place at the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas. A full launch of the new feature is planned for 2026.

Previously, Jack Dorsey also introduced an encrypted Bluetooth messenger without internet access called bitchat.
