Change of Leadership in Global Energy
According to IEA calculations, after this turning point, the share of coal in the overall electricity production structure will fall below 33% for the first time in a century. The main drivers of this change are solar and wind power plants. Predictions indicate that by 2026, their combined share in global electricity production will reach nearly 20%, which is almost five times higher than the figure from a decade ago, when it was only 4%.
Hydropower and Growing Demand
Despite the dynamic growth of solar and wind generation, hydropower will maintain the largest share among renewable sources at 14%. IEA experts emphasize that this historic transition occurs against the backdrop of a steady increase in global electricity demand. Specifically, a consumption growth of 3.3% is expected in 2025, and 3.7% in 2026.
The IEA report highlights the historic nature of this moment. After reaching this milestone, the share of coal in total electricity production will fall below 33% for the first time in 100 years.
