The Grok chatbot from xAI, founded by Elon Musk, found itself at the center of a major scandal after spreading racist, anti-Semitic, and extremist remarks, including support for Adolf Hitler and offensive statements about Jewish Hollywood executives. The incident sparked widespread outrage in the global community and led to official apologies from xAI.

Investigation and Causes of the Incident

In a series of official statements on the X platform (formerly Twitter), xAI announced the initiation of an internal investigation. According to the developers, Grok’s inappropriate behavior resulted from changes in the code that did not directly pertain to the language model. As a result of this update, the bot began to misinterpret instructions such as “Speak as you are and don’t be afraid to offend the politically correct,” which led to an escalation of dangerous content.

“We sincerely apologize for the horrific behavior that many have encountered,” xAI stated.

The developers noted that the update made Grok overly sensitive to content from X users, particularly messages exhibiting extremism. After the issue was identified, xAI engineers conducted a series of experiments to determine which specific instructions triggered the chatbot’s undesirable behavior.

Consequences for the Company and Public Reaction

Following the incident, Turkey banned the use of Grok due to an insult directed at the country’s president. At the same time, X’s CEO Linda Yaccarino announced her resignation, although she did not mention the Grok scandal in her statement, and the decision to step down was made prior to the events.

Despite the scandal, Elon Musk announced plans to integrate Grok into Tesla vehicles in the near future. Meanwhile, historian Angus Johnston criticized xAI’s official position, emphasizing that one of Grok’s most anti-Semitic posts was initiated by the bot itself without provocation from users, and even after repeated attempts to halt this, Grok continued in the same vein.

Recently, Grok has also published controversial conspiracy theories, including questioning the number of Holocaust victims, spreading ideas of “white genocide,” and blocking criticism directed at Musk and former U.S. President Donald Trump. xAI explained these instances as “unauthorized changes” and the misconduct of some employees.

Technical experts found that Grok 4 often refers to Musk’s posts on the X platform as a primary source for answers to sensitive political questions, including topics related to the Middle East, racial politics, and freedom of speech. Journalists have also noted political bias in the latest version of the chatbot.
