EU Approves New Sanctions Package Against Russia: Details and Consequences

Посли країн ЄС схвалили новий пакет санкцій проти РФ.

In response to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s refusal to cease fire, the countries of the European Union have decided to implement a new, 17th sanctions package. This package, while strict in nature, may turn out to be weaker than expected. As is known, the ambassadors of EU countries have already given their approval.

Hungary and Slovakia, which have a significant dependence on Russian energy imports, supported this package, considering its relative leniency. The new sanctions will further restrict Moscow’s access to technologies used on the battlefield and also include the blacklisting of an additional 189 vessels from the so-called “shadow fleet” of Russia.

The final approval of the new sanctions will take place on May 20. Given previous packages, nearly 350 “shadow vessels” will be subject to restrictions. European Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis emphasized that the EC will continue to pressure Russia: after the approval of the 17th package, the EU will begin work on subsequent measures.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine also noted that the new restrictions could target Russia’s banking sector. At the same time, the Verkhovna Rada adopted in principle bill No. 13020, which will allow for restrictions on specific vessels and aircraft involved in the shadow transportation of oil, weapons, and military personnel.
