Increase in Defense Budget and Spending Priorities
The draft budget for 2026 includes expenditures of €520.5 billion, of which the Ministry of Defense’s budget will increase by €20.3 billion to €82.7 billion. Of this amount, €38.5 billion is allocated for military procurement and modernization of defense systems. This represents the largest investment in the country’s security in recent years, underscoring the seriousness of the approach to protecting against potential threats.
Support for Ukraine and Europe’s Role
Lars Klingbeil highlighted that Germany remains one of the main donors for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. He assured that the country’s upcoming budgets will provide both military and financial support for Ukraine.
“We are obligated to enhance our capacity for deterrence and defense. We are doing the right thing by standing with Ukraine, and today Germany is one of the largest donors in the world helping Ukraine defend itself against this brutal war. And we are ensuring that this continues: the 2026 budget provides for it. A clear promise to Ukraine – further military and financial support will be provided,” said the Finance Minister.
Additionally, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized the need for more active support for Ukraine from Europe, noting that European countries must “grow up” and take greater responsibility in matters of security and assistance to Ukraine.
