“We discussed the next steps of the EU to strengthen sanctions pressure on Russia. We expect them to be truly powerful and hit Putin’s military budget,”
the minister emphasized.
US Position on New Sanctions Against Russia
At the same time, the United States announced that it does not plan to impose new restrictions on Russia in the near future. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that Washington aims to preserve the possibility for peace negotiations.
“If we do what everyone here (at the NATO summit in The Hague) wants us to do, namely intervene and crush Russia with new sanctions, we will likely lose the opportunity to negotiate a ceasefire with them,”
Rubio explained.
Trump Controls US Sanctions Policy
Marco Rubio emphasized that Donald Trump, as President of the United States, will determine the optimal moment to impose new economic measures against Russia. The Secretary of State assured that Washington does not share Moscow’s position, which hopes to achieve its territorial goals through military means on the battlefield.
