Rapid Growth in Revenue and Popularity

Since May 2023, users of iOS and Android devices have spent approximately $2 billion on the ChatGPT app. This is about 30 times more than the total spending on its main competitors — Claude, Copilot, and Grok. The majority of the revenue was generated in 2025: in just the first seven months of the current year, the app brought in $1.35 billion, which is 673% higher than the same period last year ($174 million). The average monthly revenue for ChatGPT is around $193 million — $25 million more than the corresponding period in 2024.

In comparison, the closest competitor Grok has earned only $25.6 million since the beginning of the year, which constitutes just 1.9% of ChatGPT’s revenue. The average revenue per app installation for OpenAI worldwide is $2.91, and in the U.S. it is $10. The U.S. accounts for 38% of total revenue.

Download Dynamics and User Geography

The total number of ChatGPT downloads has exceeded 690 million, with 318 million occurring in 2025. This is 2.8 times more than in the same period last year. India leads in new installations (13.7%), followed by the U.S. (10.3%).

According to Appfigures, monthly downloads in 2025 reached approximately 45 million, which is 180% more than in January-July 2024 (16 million). After the U.S., Germany has become the second-largest market by revenue, accounting for 5.3% of total user spending.

“While part of the companies’ revenue comes from corporate subscriptions and APIs, these figures reflect the popularity of the mobile version of ChatGPT among regular users.”

In November 2023, xAI launched Grok without a mobile version, which experts believe impacted its weaker financial results. The Grok mobile app for iOS became available only in January 2025, and the Android version in March of the same year.
