Cryptocurrencies: Latest Events

Bitcoin experienced a sharp rise on May 12, 2025, when an agreement was announced between China and the US to reduce tariffs by 115% over 90 days. As a result, the price of the cryptocurrency exceeded $105,000. The following day, May 13, the growth continued due to positive inflation data in the US. Although there were minor dips afterward, the overall Bitcoin price remained in the range of $101,000 – $104,000, and at the time of writing, it is trading at $103,893 on the Binance exchange.

Significant Investments and the Crypto Asset Market

The Japanese investment company Metaplanet invested 18.4 billion yen (over $124.6 million) in 1241 BTC, increasing its total holdings to 6796 BTC. The Brazilian fintech company Méliuz purchased 274.52 BTC for $28.4 million, becoming the first in the local market to specialize in Bitcoin treasury management. Tether also made a significant purchase, acquiring 4812 BTC for $458.7 million for the Twenty One Capital fund, which plans to go public through a merger.

“In Ukraine, preparations have been announced for the possible creation of a national Bitcoin reserve,” said Yaroslav Zheleznyak, the first deputy chairman of the Committee on Finance, Taxation, and Customs Policy.

Meanwhile, in the Ethereum market, its price remained in a sideways movement after a sharp jump on May 8-9, followed by a dip on May 17, reaching $2508. Experts point to the increase in demand for stablecoins as one of the factors for this jump.

At the same time, Ukrainian lawmakers are preparing a bill on virtual assets, which, as Zheleznyak noted, is planned to be submitted soon. However, this bill has faced resistance from the President’s Office.

An important event also occurred in the financial industry: Coinbase became the first crypto company to be included in the S&P 500 index, replacing Discover Financial Services. This inclusion is expected to take place on May 19, positively impacting Coinbase’s stock.

The eToro platform successfully debuted on Nasdaq, where its shares rose by 29% in one day, attracting $620 million in pre-sales.
