Proposed Restrictions for Officials

During the review of the document, both Democrats and Republicans proposed a ban on senior officials, including the president, vice president, members of Congress, and their families, from participating in cryptocurrency businesses. This wording aimed to avoid conflicts of interest among high-ranking officials in the field of digital assets.

However, the team of current President Donald Trump opposed this restriction, effectively blocking the consideration of the relevant clause in the bill. Journalist Laura Shin noted that a likely reason for this opposition is the numerous connections Trump’s representatives have with cryptocurrency projects.

“According to her, the wording implies restrictions for the president, vice president, members of Congress, and their families regarding participation in the cryptocurrency business.”

Previously, the Trump team had already blocked the advancement of another bill related to the regulation of stablecoins—the GENIUS Act. Despite these challenges, on June 11, 2025, the GENIUS Act received bipartisan support in the U.S. Senate, allowing it to move forward for further consideration in the House of Representatives.
