SPAR Supermarket Chain in Switzerland Begins Accepting Bitcoin

Один із супермаркетів SPAR у Швейцарії почав приймати біткоїни

The SPAR supermarket chain in Switzerland has expanded its payment options for customers by introducing Bitcoin payments at one of its stores located in Zug. This has been made possible through the implementation of the OpenCryptoPay solution from DFX Swiss. According to representatives of the chain, this is one of the first supermarkets in the country where customers can pay for their purchases with cryptocurrency.

Customers can now pay for goods in this store directly at the checkout using LNURL technology – a Lightning Network standard that allows for fast and secure Bitcoin transactions. With this system, a buyer can scan a QR code and send satoshis, ensuring instant payment processing.

How the Bitcoin Payment System Works at SPAR Supermarket

The functionality of the new system was demonstrated by Rahim Taghizadegan from Bitcoin Association Switzerland. He stated:

“The first Bitcoin payment at the SPAR supermarket in Zug, Switzerland. Excellent implementation, DFX Swiss. Just scan the QR code, send satoshis, immediate and simple processing at the cashier.”

He noted that he used the Phoenix Wallet for the payment, but any service supporting the Lightning Network is suitable. According to him, if demand for such a service increases, it is planned to roll it out across all SPAR stores in the country.

The SPAR network includes about 13,900 locations in 48 countries worldwide. The implementation of this technology opens up prospects for integrating similar solutions across all supermarkets of the brand, which will contribute to the popularization of cryptocurrencies in the retail sector.

It was previously reported that the marketplace Mercari has also begun accepting Bitcoin as a payment method.
