JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia” demonstrated the highest monthly freight transportation volumes since the beginning of the full-scale war, recorded in May and June 2025. According to official data, in May the company transported 16.3 million tons of cargo, while in June it transported 16.2 million tons. Growth in Volumes and Influencing Factors
The significant increase in transportation volumes in June 2025, amounting to 10.3% compared to the same period last year, is attributed to the active processing of transitional manual transport documents by the branch of the Unified Settlement Center. It is worth noting that earlier, “Ukrzaliznytsia” had predicted a decrease in the total annual transportation volume in 2025 by 10 million tons – to 165 million tons. Against this backdrop, the company’s management initiated a tariff increase for freight transportation to compensate for the expected losses.
Financial Results and Business Reaction
In 2024, the railway company reported an operating profit from freight transportation of 20.39 billion hryvnias. A significant portion of these funds was used to cover losses associated with passenger transportation through cross-subsidization. The business community has repeatedly criticized this practice, considering it economically unjustified.
