EU plans to fine social network X $1 billion for rule violations

влада ЄС має намір оштрафувати соцмережу X на $1 млрд

The European Commission has launched an investigation into the social network X (formerly Twitter) due to identified violations of the Digital Services Act. As a result of the investigation, potential sanctions could reach $1 billion, along with demands for changes to the platform’s operations.

According to media reports, the fine could be announced in the summer of 2025, and the EU intends to use this case as a benchmark for other tech companies, emphasizing the importance of adhering to new digital laws.

Reasons for the Investigation

The investigation into X’s activities began in 2023 when it was found that the company had not complied with regulatory requirements. Among the main complaints are the refusal to provide data to external researchers, insufficient transparency in advertising mechanisms, and a low level of control over user-generated content.

X’s Response and Possible Consequences

Elon Musk, CEO of X, expressed his intention to contest any fines, calling the actions of the European Union “censorship.” He previously stated that in the event of sanctions, he is prepared to engage in a “public legal battle.” Sources report that if X fails to meet the EU’s demands, it could lead to even more serious legal conflicts.

“If the reports that the European Commission is considering enforcement actions against X are accurate, it represents an unprecedented act of political censorship and an attack on free speech.”

Additionally, the EU is investigating the activities of other major tech companies, and fines for Meta and Apple are expected in the near future under the Digital Services Act. This underscores the increasing efforts of regulators to oversee digital platforms.
