American senators, Republican Lindsey Graham and Democrat Richard Blumenthal, have initiated a bill aimed at imposing new sanctions against Russia due to the Kremlin’s refusal to engage in a peace agreement.

“There is a prevailing sentiment in the Senate that Russia is the aggressor, and that this horrific war and Putin’s aggression must end now and be deterred in the future,” reads a joint statement from 50 senators.
The bill includes both primary and secondary sanctions that will target Moscow and individuals supporting the Kremlin’s aggression against Ukraine. The sanctions will take effect in the event of a breakdown in peace negotiations or a violation by Russia of the signed agreement. Among the proposed restrictions is a 500% tariff on imported goods from countries that purchase Russian oil, gas, uranium, and other natural resources.
“These sanctions against Russia are ready and will receive overwhelming support from both parties and both chambers if brought to a vote,” the senators stated.
They also noted a shared frustration with President Trump’s stance on Russia in the context of achieving a ceasefire and supported his efforts to attain a lasting, fair, and dignified peace.
