Ukraine expects that the European Union will approve the 19th sanctions package against the Russian Federation as early as the beginning of October. These restrictions are intended to be a response to Russia’s refusal to engage in any genuine peace proposals, as well as to its continued aggressive actions against Ukraine and European countries.

Sanction Pressure and the Role of Energy Resources
President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that the new sanctions package should primarily deliver a serious blow to Russia’s energy trade and its tanker fleet. Special attention is planned to be given to restrictions concerning the infrastructure for transporting oil and gas. According to the head of state, this should become a powerful tool for reducing funding for Moscow’s military machine.
“Moreover, there is now intelligence information that the Russians are using tankers to launch and control drones that are aimed at European countries,” the president emphasized.
Negotiations Among EU Countries Continue
At the end of last week, ambassadors from 27 European Union countries began discussions on new sanctions against the Russian Federation. However, full agreement on the 19th package has not yet been reached due to several reservations from certain member states. In particular, Slovakia expressed concerns regarding the energy and transport aspects of the package, although there has been no formal blocking of the decision. Bratislava’s position remains unclear, and diplomats point to possible support for such actions from Hungary. Additionally, some other EU countries also have separate remarks, so the negotiation process continues as expected.
