Capital governments of the European Union are urging Brussels to postpone potential measures in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs until the NATO summit, which will take place on June 24-25. According to European officials, the primary task should be to secure an agreement with the U.S. regarding Europe’s security in the medium term.

In particular, European governments advocate for a pause in making significant decisions related to the United States, including substantial defense investments, until the outcomes of the NATO meeting in The Hague next month are known.
Reducing the Risks of Confrontation
NATO officials also express concerns and call for minimizing the summit agenda to reduce the risk of conflicts with Trump amid uncertainty regarding his future actions. The U.S. President insists that European allies commit to spending 5% of their GDP on defense and share the responsibility for the continent’s security, which has been largely borne by the U.S. for decades.
“Ahead of The Hague, we are very nervous, and the general sentiment is: do everything possible to get Trump there, tell him what he wants to hear, and send him back without any disasters”
, said one senior EU official.
