According to The Wall Street Journal, US President Donald Trump has decided to temporarily postpone the implementation of new tariffs on imported goods. This decision came after an informal conversation with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessen and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, which took place without the participation of trade advisor Peter Navarro, a known proponent of tariff policies.

“The ministers convinced Trump of the necessity to implement a 90-day pause in the introduction of tariffs,” the source reports.

At the same time, the European Union is preparing an action plan in case negotiations between the EU and the US do not conclude successfully before the end of the 90-day pause. In the event of unsuccessful agreements, the EU intends to implement countermeasures, including additional tariffs and restrictions on government procurement from American companies. Such measures could escalate the trade dispute, as the US has already imposed tariffs on EU goods worth approximately €380 billion.

Possible EU Measures in Response to the Trade Conflict

Export restrictions are one of several options being considered by the European Union to protect its economic interests. In addition, additional tariffs and restrictions on the purchase of American goods are being considered. According to analysts, the implementation of such restrictions could provoke a response from the US, intensifying the trade conflict and complicating the search for a compromise.
