Trump Announces 50% Tariff on Goods from the EU: A Blow to the Automotive and Aviation Industries

Трамп допускає запровадження нових санкцій проти РФ.

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced his intention to impose a 50% tariff on products manufactured in European Union countries. The introduction of the new tariffs could take effect as early as June 1, as negotiations regarding tariffs between the U.S. and the EU, according to Trump, have yielded no results.

Impact on Key Industries and Possible Consequences

Trump emphasized that only products from European companies manufactured directly in the United States would be exempt from the tariffs. At the same time, the U.S. president noted that he no longer intends to negotiate a trade agreement with the European Union. In his view, the EU was created to gain an advantage in trade over the United States.

“The European Union was formed to gain an advantage over the U.S. in the trade sphere.”

Analysts believe that the 50% tariff could negatively impact primarily the German economy — its GDP is estimated to shrink by 1.7% over a three-year period. Significant losses will be incurred by the automotive, aerospace, and chemical industries in Europe, as these sectors are closely linked to the American market. Last year, pharmaceuticals were the most sought-after products in European exports to the U.S., with their volume reaching nearly €80 billion.

EU Response and Likely Countermeasures

A significant blow is expected for aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing and Airbus, as well as well-known automotive companies: Audi, Porsche, Volvo Cars, and Mercedes-Benz. The EU, for its part, is considering the possibility of responding with mirror measures — in particular, imposing tariffs on American goods worth up to €95 billion. The list of potential restrictions includes products from Boeing, cars, and bourbon.
