Massive Growth and Strategic Support

The value of Mistral AI has risen to over $13 billion after raising $2.14 billion during a Series C funding round that took place in early September 2025. Among the investors are the leading microelectronics equipment manufacturer ASML Holding NV, venture capital firms DST Global, Andreessen Horowitz, and the state investor Bpifrance. The founders and employees of the company retain a controlling stake, emphasizing Mistral AI’s independent status.

The company was founded in 2023 in Paris and has already become one of the key players in the European artificial intelligence market. Mistral develops generative language models, as well as the chatbot Le Chat, which is positioned as the French equivalent of the American ChatGPT from OpenAI and other global solutions. Despite its dynamic development, Mistral AI still lags behind American companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI in scale.

Global Presence and Leadership

As of now, Mistral AI employs about 350 people. The company has offices in Paris, London, Luxembourg, Singapore, and the USA. The total amount of contracts signed since its inception has already exceeded $1.6 billion. Among the early investors were entrepreneur Jean-Charles Samuelian-Werve and former French Minister of Digital Technologies Cédric O.

CEO Arthur Mench, who holds a degree from Ecole Polytechnique and has experience at Google DeepMind, is the main public representative of the company. Chief Scientist Guillaume Lampl and Chief Technology Officer Timothy Lacroix also have significant experience working at leading technology companies worldwide, including Meta.

The French government views Mistral AI as a strategically important project for ensuring Europe’s technological independence. President Emmanuel Macron has repeatedly emphasized that the company serves as an example of France’s ability to compete with Silicon Valley and enhance its own potential in the field of artificial intelligence.

Mench emphasized in an interview that Mistral intends to remain independent. According to him, the company bears “certain responsibilities” as the only major European developer of generative AI.

It is worth noting that it was previously reported that the company Cognition AI raised $400 million in investments at a valuation exceeding $10 billion.
