Investments in AI and Leadership Changes
The newly established division will bring together teams working on large language models, fundamental research, and AI-based product development. A key role in the leadership of MSL will be played by Scale AI founder Alexander Wang, who will serve as Chief AI Officer. Former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman will also join the team to work on product development.
In June 2025, Meta acquired 49% of the shares of the startup Scale AI for $14.3 billion, marking an important step to strengthen its own position in the field of artificial intelligence.
Attracting Leading Experts and Development Plans
According to company chairman Mark Zuckerberg, Meta intends to invest
“hundreds of billions”
of dollars in AI infrastructure, research initiatives, and talent acquisition to maintain its leadership in this key technology of the future. He emphasized that the development of superintelligence will mark the beginning of a new era for humanity, and Meta aims to take a leading role in this field.
MSL will integrate the company’s existing directions, including the FAIR fundamental research team and developers of large language models. Additionally, a new laboratory will be established to develop the next generation of AI models.
Alongside the restructuring, Zuckerberg announced the hiring of 11 new specialists from leading companies in the industry, including OpenAI, DeepMind, Anthropic, and Google. The team includes recognized researchers such as Jiahui Yu, Shuchao Bi, Shenjia Zhao, Hongyu Ren, and former Meta engineer Joel Poblete.
Analysts note that Meta is actively competing with OpenAI and Google in the field of generative AI and has already invested tens of billions of dollars in infrastructure by 2025. The company is also considering acquiring startups PlayAI and Runway to further expand its presence in the artificial intelligence market.
It is known that Mark Zuckerberg personally participated in negotiations with potential employees, inviting them to his home in California. Meta offers top specialists generous compensation packages with bonuses of up to $100 million to attract talent amid intensifying competition in the AI sector.
Previously, it was reported that Google decided to terminate its partnership with Scale AI due to the startup’s large deal with Meta worth $14.3 billion.
