Metaplanet Acquires 696 BTC for $68 Million, Expanding Its Crypto Portfolio

The Japanese investment company Metaplanet has announced a significant purchase of bitcoins, acquiring 696 BTC for a total of $67.9 million. This decision is part of the company’s strategy to expand its crypto portfolio.

Details of the Deal and Investment Strategy

On April 1, 2025, Metaplanet officially confirmed the increase of its assets by 696 BTC, which cost the company an average of $97,500 per bitcoin. To finance this deal, Metaplanet utilized funds obtained from the sale of previously issued put options, which were backed by cash.

According to information provided by the media outlet The Block, the company used $62.7 million as collateral for the purchase of bitcoins, allowing it to acquire a larger amount of cryptocurrency compared to standard spot transactions. Currently, Metaplanet’s total balance stands at 4046 BTC, valued at nearly $340 million.

Impact on Stocks and the Market

It was also noted that in the first quarter of 2025, Metaplanet earned 50.26 BTC from successful option sales, contributing to further growth of its crypto portfolio. Following the news of the new bitcoin purchase, the company’s stock rose by approximately 2% within a day, according to data from Yahoo Finance.

It is worth mentioning that at the time of writing, the price of bitcoin was fluctuating around the $84,000 mark.

As a reminder, on March 24, Metaplanet spent $12.6 million to purchase 150 BTC.
