Norway May Introduce Temporary Ban on Mining Due to Energy Shortage

Норвегія розгляне введення тимчасової заборони на майнінг через дефіцит енергії

The Norwegian government has announced plans to conduct a detailed investigation into the activities of data centers engaged in cryptocurrency mining in the fall of 2025. This could result in a temporary ban on mining in the country.

Reasons for Possible Mining Restrictions

The main goal of the review is to free up electricity, network capacity, and land for more important sectors of the national economy. The government cites planning and development legislation that allows for the redistribution of energy resources according to public needs.

“to free up electricity, network capacity, and land for other purposes.”

Officials emphasize that it is currently impossible to assess the scale of the mining problem in the future, but new registration requirements for data centers will help gather more accurate data on electricity consumption by miners.

Context of the Energy Crisis and International Experience

Norway, like several other European countries, is facing rising electricity costs. This has been influenced by the energy crisis caused by the war in Ukraine, as well as sanctions against Russia. Additionally, local residents have repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction due to noise from mining farms and the strain on local infrastructure.

Some countries have already imposed restrictions or a complete ban on mining. In particular, China has banned mining across its territory, forcing companies to migrate to the United States, where legislation regarding mining remains more lenient. Despite concerns from American lawmakers about the high energy consumption of miners, this activity is permitted in most states, making the U.S. a leading player in the global Bitcoin hash rate.

Meanwhile, in Norway, authorities are considering the possibility of implementing new regulatory norms in the near future. A final decision is expected to be made after the investigation concludes in the fall.

It was previously reported that Pakistan allocated 2000 MW of capacity for the development of Bitcoin mining and artificial intelligence.
