Thailand to Launch TouristDigiPay for Cryptocurrency Exchange to Thai Baht

У Таїланді заборонили іноземні P2P-криптосервіси та ввели штрафи до $8700 для «мулів»

On August 18, 2025, Thailand will launch a new initiative called TouristDigiPay, allowing foreign tourists to exchange digital assets for Thai baht to make payments in the country. This program aims to stimulate tourist flow, especially following a decline in interest from Chinese travelers.

Features of the TouristDigiPay Program

An official presentation of the initiative’s details is scheduled with the participation of Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavanij, as well as representatives from the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Anti-Money Laundering Office, the Bank of Thailand, and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. It is expected that only foreign citizens temporarily residing in the country will be able to use the service.

Tourists will need to register with licensed electronic money and digital asset providers regulated by the SEC and BOT. Personal identification is also mandatory according to AMLO requirements.

Additional Tools and Security Measures

Separately, the Bank of Thailand announced the development of Tourist Wallet — a special electronic wallet for foreign visitors that will enable convenient payments via QR codes. This wallet is designed exclusively for tourists and will facilitate the safe use of digital currencies in the country.

To prevent financial crimes, including money laundering, transaction limits have been implemented: up to 500,000 baht per month for merchants with card terminals and up to 50,000 baht for small vendors. Transactions in high-risk companies are prohibited, and funds can only be withdrawn upon account closure, with no cash access allowed.

It is worth noting that in July 2025, cryptocurrency exchanges positively assessed the SEC and Bank of Thailand’s decision to launch a regulatory “sandbox” for tourists, further confirming the relevance of such initiatives in the current tourism sector of the country.
