The European Commission has presented an ambitious plan that envisions a complete phase-out of Russian energy sources by the countries of the European Union. According to this document, negotiations for new contracts for the supply of Russian gas—both pipeline and liquefied—will cease, while all existing spot contracts will remain in effect until the end of 2025.

The EC’s plan includes a call to stop the import of gas and oil from Russia by the end of 2027, as well as urging each EU member state to develop national initiatives to abandon Russian energy sources.
New developments in the EU energy strategy
Additionally, the plan proposes to take “new actions to address the issue of Russia’s shadow fleet” and to impose restrictions on new contracts for the supply of enriched uranium and nuclear materials from Russia. At the same time, specific timelines for phasing out nuclear fuel have not been defined, and this process will occur gradually, with an emphasis on developing European alternatives.
“All measures will be accompanied by ongoing efforts to accelerate our energy transition and diversify energy supply sources to eliminate risks to supply security and market stability”
It should be noted that since the beginning of Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine, the share of Russian gas in EU consumption has decreased from 45% to 19%, while oil volumes from Russia have dropped from 27% to 3%.
