Ethereum Must Become a Simpler and More Efficient Blockchain, Says Vitalik Buterin

«Ethereum має стати простим, як біткоїн»

Co-founder of the Ethereum ecosystem, Vitalik Buterin, announced a strategic course aimed at modernizing and simplifying the operation of the Ethereum blockchain. His main goal is to enhance the scalability, stability, and efficiency of the network, which will strengthen its position as a global financial and information registry.

New Technological Approaches for Ethereum

One of the key directions will be the implementation of a new virtual machine, likely based on RISC-V architecture. According to Buterin, “complexity often becomes a barrier to development. We strive for simplicity, like in Bitcoin, so that more people can understand and develop the protocol.”

Replacing the existing Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) with a simpler and more productive version will allow for up to a 100-fold increase in the execution speed of smart contracts. At the same time, backward compatibility with existing contracts will be maintained through the use of specialized translators, similar to Apple’s Rosetta approach.

Minimizing Complexity and Enhancing Security

Additionally, the Ethereum team proposes changing the consensus model — the new “3-slot finality” mechanism will allow for the elimination of the complex structure of epochs and slots. This will significantly reduce the amount of code responsible for the network’s security, make its verification more transparent, and enhance the level of security.

There are also plans to unify the serialization protocol, Merkle trees, and data erasure codes into single systems, which will reduce duplication and improve the network’s efficiency. This will contribute to simplifying the technological stack, lowering the number of errors, and facilitating the entry of new developers into the ecosystem.

Vitalik Buterin emphasized: “We must choose simpler solutions where possible and implement encapsulated complexity rather than systemic complexity. This is the path to a truly reliable protocol.”

He also previously highlighted the importance of supporting decentralization and the resilience of the network, which are key values of Ethereum.
