Trans-Balkan Route: New Opportunities for the Ukrainian Market

On November 6-7, a summit of the Partnership for Transatlantic Energy Cooperation (P‑TEC) is taking place in Greece, gathering high-ranking officials from the United States, including Energy Secretary Chris Wright, and representatives from about 25 countries in Europe and America. One of the key topics of the meeting is the development of the Trans-Balkan route, which allows for gas transportation from Greece to Eastern European countries, including Ukraine. The summit is also discussing the expansion of LNG infrastructure in Greece and the prospects for increasing American LNG supplies to Ukraine.

“A contract for the supply of LNG from the American producer Venture Global to Ukrainian DTEK and Naftogaz may soon be signed, facilitated by the new Greek company Atlantic – SEE LNG Trade. This involves 2 billion cubic meters per year, which will be transported via the Trans-Balkan route.”

Increased U.S. Activity in the LNG Market and Prospects for Europe

American LNG producers are demonstrating record rates of new contract signings in 2025. In the first ten months of this year, exporters have signed long-term agreements for the supply of 29.5 million tons of gas annually, which is more than four times the total for all of 2024. This is the second-highest figure in the history of the sector, surpassed only by 2022, when demand for American LNG surged following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Following Donald Trump’s return to the presidency, the U.S. administration has intensified the promotion of American LNG in global markets and lifted the moratorium on approving new export projects. This has stimulated a new wave of investment decisions that will increase export capacity by 61.5 million tons per year, adding to the existing 120 million tons. Analysts predict that by 2029, U.S. LNG capacity will double, and by 2030, the country will be able to supply one-third of the world’s LNG exports.
