Gas consumption in the European Union in 2024 increased by only 2 billion cubic meters, reaching 332 billion cubic meters. This figure is 7% lower than in 2022 and 20% lower than in 2021. At the same time, the total volume of gas imports to the EU amounted to 273 billion cubic meters, reflecting a decrease of 6% compared to 2023 and 18% compared to 2022.

According to the data, Norway accounted for 33% of gas imports, while Russia’s share was 19% and the USA’s was 17%. It is important to note that in 2024, the EU became the world’s largest consumer of liquefied natural gas (LNG), with a 20% share of the market. LNG imports to the EU reached 101 billion cubic meters, which is 16% less than in 2023 and 14% less than in 2022.
LNG: US Leadership and Supplies from Russia
The USA remained the largest supplier of LNG to the EU with a 45% share, followed by Russia with 20% and Qatar with 12%. The volume of pipeline gas imports to the EU in 2024 reached 172 billion cubic meters, which is 2% less than in 2023 and 21% less than in 2022. Norway provided 50% of pipeline imports, while Russia’s share was 18%.
Interestingly, in March 2025, gas supplies from Russian Gazprom to Europe via the Turkish Stream decreased by 19.4% compared to February, to 45 million cubic meters per day.
