In March 2025, Italy’s metallurgical enterprises demonstrated significant growth in steel production, increasing output by 11.2% compared to the previous month, reaching 2.02 million tons. Compared to the same month last year, the figure rose by 6%, according to data from the industry association Federacciai. In the first quarter of 2025, steel production in the country increased by 3.1% compared to the same period in 2024, totaling 5.53 million tons.

Production Distribution and Key Trends

Significant growth was recorded in flat rolled products, which increased by 13.6% year-on-year and by 15.1% month-on-month in March, reaching 904 thousand tons. In the first three months of 2025, the production volume of this type of product rose by 9.1%, amounting to 2.5 million tons.

Production of long products from January to March increased by 1.2% year-on-year and by 20% month-on-month, totaling 1.2 million tons. At the same time, the overall production volume of this product for the first quarter of 2025 decreased by 0.9% compared to the same period in 2024, amounting to 3.1 million tons.

As reported by GMK Center, in 2024, steel production in Italy decreased by 5% compared to 2023, totaling 20 million tons. In December 2024, steel production dropped by 8.8% compared to December 2023, and by 33.4% compared to the previous month, reaching 1.199 million tons. The production of long products for the year amounted to 11.7 million tons, which is 0.2% less than the figure for 2023, while flat product production totaled 8.6 million tons, down by 9.7% year-on-year.

Overall, in 2024, steel production in the European Union increased by 2.6%, totaling 129.5 million tons, while global production volume decreased by 0.9%, amounting to 1.84 billion tons.
