Experts note that recent reports have emerged regarding the interest of both the US and Russia in resuming operations of the gas pipeline “Nord Stream 2”. Its restart could provide billions of euros in funding for Putin’s war machine, which continues to commit acts of aggression against Ukraine.

Western leaders must reject any initiatives aimed at restoring the operation of Russian gas pipelines and strengthen sanctions. Europe cannot afford to halt its progress towards energy security. A complete embargo on Russian fossil fuels is the only way to stop funding Putin’s war and ensure lasting peace in Ukraine.
Consequences of Restarting for Russia’s Budget
If the gas pipeline is restarted, Russia’s budget would receive an additional 4.7 billion euros annually. If these funds are directed towards military needs, it could finance, for example, 104,794 Shahed drones or 1,711 Iskander-M ballistic missiles.
Possible Resumption of Gas Imports from Russia
Despite these threats, leaders of major European companies, including French firms Engie and TotalEnergies, have begun discussing the prospects of a moderate resumption of gas imports from Russia,
“if a reasonable peace is achieved in Ukraine”
