Serbia Extends Contract for Importing Russian Gas Until September 2025

Сербія продовжила контракт на імпорт газу з РФ, тоді як одна з провідних країн ЄС підтримала відмову від російських енергоносіїв.

Serbia and the Russian Federation have signed a new agreement that extends the existing gas supply contract, which is set to expire in May 2025. According to the agreement, from June 1 to September 30, 2025, Belgrade will receive 6.1 million cubic meters of gas daily at a price of 290 euros per 1,000 cubic meters. The next step for Serbia is to achieve sustainable gas import volumes from the Russian Federation of 8 million cubic meters per day, with the possibility of receiving an additional 4 million cubic meters on cold days.

Serbia’s Role in the Transit of Russian Gas to the EU

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has once again criticized Ukraine for its decision not to extend the transit contract with the Russian Federation. He stated that Ukraine has become “one of the main reasons for the energy crisis in Europe”. Hungary signed an agreement in 2021 for the transportation of Russian gas bypassing Ukrainian territory, and Serbia currently acts as a transit country. As Szijjarto noted, more than 20 million cubic meters of natural gas are supplied daily through Serbia to Hungary, which amounts to approximately 7.5 billion cubic meters annually.

He stated that Ukraine has become “one of the main reasons for the energy crisis in Europe.”

Italy’s Position on Importing Russian Gas

At the same time, the Italian Ministry of Energy fully supports the European Union’s initiatives aimed at ending the import of Russian gas by 2027. The expansion of regasification infrastructure allows Rome to increase imports of liquefied natural gas from alternative sources, particularly from the United States.
