62% of Western Companies Have Left Russia, Energy Giants Plan to Return

Росію після початку війни покинули 62% західних компаній, але енергетичні гіганти розглядають повернення до РФ після скасування санкцій.

In the three years since the start of the full-scale war initiated by Russia against Ukraine, 62% of companies from “unfriendly” countries have exited the Russian market. According to data from the consulting firm Kept, the sample included more than 300 foreign companies that had “substantial assets” in Russia and revenues exceeding ₽1 billion. As of the end of 2024, 183 companies have completed their exit from the market.

It is noted that the decision to exit was most often made by companies from Northern Europe, where the share was 94%. Among companies from the USA, Germany, France, and the UK, this figure ranged from 59% to 67%. The highest exit rate was recorded in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, where it stands at 100%. The fewest companies that left Russia came from Austria (50%), Switzerland (38%), Italy (22%), and Belgium. At the same time, 96 foreign companies, accounting for one-third of the sample, continue their operations in Russia.

Return of Energy Giants

Meanwhile, several of the world’s largest energy traders are considering the possibility of returning to the Russian market after the complete lifting of sanctions. Companies such as Gunvor Group, Mercuria Energy Group, and Trafigura Group have already announced their intentions.
