Which Countries Are Most Interested in Retaining Ukrainian Refugees

Як трансформується підтримка українських воєнних біженців у країнах ЄС?

European countries are actively interested in having Ukrainian refugees remain on their territory. This was stated by migration policy expert Andriy Haidutskyi. According to him, the main countries seeking to retain immigrants understand that without attracting foreign labor, they will have to close a significant number of production facilities. This is especially true for the countries of the Scandinavian northern region.

At the same time, Haidutskyi notes that the situation is significantly different in Hungary and Poland. In these countries, there is still a negative attitude towards foreign workers, and preference is given specifically to Ukrainians in the employment process. However, Eastern EU countries, such as Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia, are suffering from a shortage of inexpensive labor. Therefore, they are actively preparing their populations for a multicultural society and liberalizing legislation to facilitate the employment of foreigners.

Movement of Ukrainian Refugees and Future Changes in EU Policy

With the decrease in support for Ukrainian refugees in Germany, where over 1.2 million people are seeking asylum, some of them are likely to move to other countries with lower living costs. Germany is currently planning to reduce the number of applications for refugee status to 100,000 annually, strengthen deportation, and suspend family reunification programs.

“Undoubtedly, there are countries that aim to retain Ukrainian refugees to ensure their economy has a workforce,” the expert notes.
