France Increased Steel Production in March 2025 by 10.4% Compared to Last Year

In the first quarter of 2025, French metallurgical companies reported a 2.1% increase in steel production compared to the same period last year. In March 2025, the volume of steel production in France reached 921 thousand tons, which is 10.4% more than in March 2024, when production was approximately 835 thousand tons.

This allowed the country to rise to 18th place in the global ranking of steel producers according to the WorldSteel Association. Compared to the previous month, production volumes increased by 0.7%. In the first three months of 2025, metallurgical enterprises in France produced 2.59 million tons of steel, which is 2.1% more than in January-March 2024, but 3.9% less than the figures from the previous quarter.

Development of the Metallurgical Industry in France in 2024

In 2024, French metallurgical enterprises increased steel production by 7.6% compared to 2023, reaching 10.76 million tons. This was made possible after a significant decline of 17.5% in 2023. In 2024, the average monthly steel production was 896.25 thousand tons, while in 2023 it was 833 thousand tons, and in 2022 it was 1.01 million tons.

France has 11 metallurgical plants, including:

  • Saarstahl Ascoval Saint-Saulve — 730 thousand tons
  • LME Trith-Saint-Léger — 820 thousand tons
  • Ascometal Hagondange — 825 thousand tons
  • Riva Sam Neuves-Maisons — 850 thousand tons
  • Riva Sam Montereau — 720 thousand tons
  • Riva Alpa Gargenville — 700 thousand tons
  • Riva Iton Seine Bonnieres-sur-Seine — 550 thousand tons
  • Celsa France Boucau — 1.2 million tons
  • ArcelorMittal Méditerranée Fos-sur-Mer — 2.55 million tons
  • Ascometal Fos Sur Mer — 900 thousand tons

The total production capacity of all plants is 12.09 million tons of steel per year.
