Gas Prices in Ukraine Exceeded European Prices for the First Time in a Year

Вперше за рік ціни на газ в Україні перевищили європейські.

According to Natural Gas ExPro quotes, natural gas prices in Ukraine on April 29 amounted to about €31.8 per MWh, while spot prices at the Dutch gas hub TTF were €31.5 per MWh. This means that for the first time since May 1, 2024, gas prices in Ukraine have exceeded European prices, with a difference of €0.3.

Reasons for the Increase in Gas Prices in Ukraine

This development is explained by the fact that over the past week, natural gas prices in Europe have decreased due to warm weather and stable supply volumes. At the same time, gas prices in Ukraine have risen due to sustained stable demand, particularly from state companies such as Naftogaz and the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine. Additionally, supply volumes have decreased as Ukrnafta halted gas sales on the market after the government mandated it to sell gas to Naftogaz under the socially important mandatory sale (PСO) regulations.

Possible Prospects for Gas Imports

Currently, the price difference between Europe and Ukraine is insufficient to restore commercial natural gas imports by private companies, as it does not cover transportation costs. However, if this trend continues, traders may begin to import gas for resale in the Ukrainian market, which could potentially impact the pricing situation in the country.
