Poland Plans to Build a European Standard Railway to Odesa to Expand Access to Black Sea Ports

Польща планує прокласти євроколію до Одеси заради доступу до українських портів Чорного моря.

The Polish government is considering a large-scale infrastructure project that involves the construction of a European standard railway line connecting Silesia with the Ukrainian city of Odesa and one of the ports on the Black Sea. This initiative was announced by Bartłomiej Babuszka, the head of the Industrial Development Agency (ARP).

Investments and Strategic Plans of Poland

According to reports, Poland is ready to invest in the construction of the European railway on Ukrainian territory – from Lviv to Odesa. The length of the route exceeds 800 km, and the investment volume is estimated in the tens of billions of euros. The costs include the acquisition of land along the future railway, which is expected to become an important logistical artery for both countries. The project has already been discussed with Ukrainian officials, and one of the key stages is the expansion of the railway terminal in Sławków, which is planned to be completed within the next two years.

“Just as the purpose of Poland’s existence is to protect Ukraine from Russia, the purpose of Poland’s existence is to develop infrastructure in the east. For the first time in history, we can own a seaport on the Black Sea,” Babuszka stated.

Opportunity to Access the Black Sea

The idea of developing transportation infrastructure aims not only to improve access to Black Sea ports but also to promote economic development in the region. Earlier, the Polish Ministry of Agriculture considered the possibility of renting or purchasing a port in Odesa, while Ukraine, in turn, launched a concession project for the “Chornomorsk” port.

Poland’s plans for the European railway and the development of port capacities could significantly change the logistical map of the region and create new opportunities for bilateral cooperation in transportation and trade.
