US Prepares New Sanctions Against Russia’s Energy Sector if Peace Agreement is Rejected

Удар по енергетичних доходах Москви: США готують нові санкції проти РФ у разі відмови Путіна від мирної угоди.

The US plans to impose additional sanctions on the energy sector of the Russian Federation if Putin refuses to conclude a peace agreement with Ukraine. It is expected that the American restrictions will target vessels from the so-called shadow fleet of Russia that transport oil, as well as sanctions against traders involved in these operations. According to preliminary information, the announcement of new measures may come as early as the end of this week.

Deepening US Sanction Policy

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessen held consultations with European diplomats, emphasizing that the Trump administration intends to continue efforts to end the war in Ukraine. The focus is on increasing economic pressure through restrictions on Russia’s energy revenues. According to Bessen, the sanction initiatives are coordinated with international partners, enhancing their effectiveness.

Legislative Initiatives in the US to Restrict Trade in Russian Oil

Ukraine’s Ambassador to Washington, Olga Stefanishina, reported that a bipartisan bill has been introduced in the US Senate, which provides for sanctions against individuals and companies that purchase or facilitate the import of oil and petroleum products from Russia. The bill’s sponsors emphasize that financing Russian oil directly supports military actions against Ukraine. The adoption of this document will create new legal mechanisms to increase pressure on Russia’s oil revenues. If the bill is passed, the US President is required to implement corresponding sanctions against individuals involved in the trade of Russian oil within 90 days.

“Any sanctions harm the establishment of relations.”

In response to these initiatives, a Kremlin spokesperson stated that Moscow is aware of Washington’s plans and emphasized the negative impact of sanctions on bilateral relations.
