Trump Uses Oil Prices to Pressure Russia in Negotiations with Ukraine

Трамп планує використати ціни на нафту та угоду про надра з Україною аби примусити Путіна до миру.

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed the opinion that the decline in oil prices creates additional pressure on Russia and increases the chances of reaching a peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine.

“Now that oil prices have fallen, we have a good moment for agreements. Russia wants to negotiate, Ukraine wants to negotiate”

, Trump noted. He has repeatedly called on OPEC to increase oil production and lower prices, arguing that such a move would deprive Russia of revenue and contribute to the resolution of the conflict. The U.S. administration has also warned of the possibility of new sanctions and other pressure measures as peace talks progress slowly.

According to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Trump viewed an agreement with Ukraine on joint resource development as an important tool to strengthen pressure on Russia in the context of peace negotiations. Bessent emphasized that the idea of such an agreement originated with Trump, who believed that economic partnership with Ukraine would demonstrate the unity of Washington and Kyiv’s positions and provide the U.S. with additional leverage to pressure the Russian leadership. The signing of the agreement was intended to symbolize U.S. support for Ukraine.

Trump also noted that he considers Putin’s proposal for a three-day ceasefire an important step toward a peaceful resolution, emphasizing:

“It doesn’t sound like much, but it’s a lot if you know where we started”
