The Hrybovytskyi landfill near Lviv is undergoing a major transformation: the second phase of reclamation has begun, during which a special membrane is covered with fertile soil. The completion of this stage will allow for the planting of perennial plants across the entire area, which will serve as the foundation for the ecological restoration of the territory.

A Golf Course for the Rehabilitation of Soldiers
By the end of this year, the summit of the landfill is set to feature the first golf course in Lviv, which will be used for training and recreation for soldiers undergoing treatment in the city. In addition to the sports infrastructure, there will also be a relaxation area, making the site attractive to residents and visitors of Lviv.
History and European Investments
The area of the landfill is 38 hectares. This site was once one of the largest landfills in Ukraine, operating since 1958. The issue of its closure and the establishment of a waste processing plant has been raised since the late 1990s. Tragic events occurred in May 2016, when, after extinguishing a fire, a landslide of waste occurred, resulting in the deaths of three rescuers. In November of the same year, the court decided to close the landfill, leading to a waste crisis in Lviv.
“The second phase of reclamation is actively underway at the Hrybovytskyi landfill – the membrane is being covered with a fertile layer of soil. After this, perennial plants will be planted throughout the area. By the end of the year, the first golf course is planned to be established on the summit – for training soldiers who are receiving treatment in Lviv.”
In 2020, large-scale reclamation works began at the landfill. The European Investment Bank provided a €4.7 million loan for these needs, guaranteed by the EU. By May 2022, a biogas power plant was opened in Velyki Hrybovychi, which extracts gas from the landfill and supplies electricity to about 735 households.
