Britain and France Plan Long-Term Defense of Ukraine Without US Involvement

Зміна пріоритетів: Британія та Франція готуються до забезпечення довгострокової оборони України без підтримки США замість відправки миротворців.

Britain and France are reassessing their strategy for supporting Ukraine: they are now focusing on organizing the long-term defense of the country without involving the United States. Relevant changes in priorities are being discussed by officials from both countries, who previously considered the possibility of deploying European peacekeeping forces to support a ceasefire.

European Support Amid Uncertainty Over US Position

Recently, there has been growing concern in European capitals about the potential withdrawal of the US president from the role of mediator in resolving the situation in Ukraine, especially if efforts to engage Vladimir Putin in the negotiation process fail. In this context, Britain and France find it prudent to shift the focus from military intervention to ensuring Ukraine’s defense capabilities in the long term, considering that the US will limit its assistance primarily to intelligence data and certain resources.

Economic Pressure and International Cooperation

European officials have also agreed on the need to further strengthen economic pressure on the Russian Federation. During a meeting of foreign ministers in The Hague, Ukraine’s allies decided to invite President Volodymyr Zelensky to the NATO summit in June. His participation in the event had previously been in question, as former US President Donald Trump had expressed opposition to his presence.

In particular, officials have changed their priorities: instead of deploying European troops to support a ceasefire, they will focus on ensuring the long-term defense of Kyiv without US involvement.
