The United Kingdom is considering directing the proceeds from the sale of oil seized from vessels of the so-called “shadow fleet” of the Russian Federation to support Ukraine. This approach will not only limit the financial resources of the Russian Federation but also provide additional funding for the Ukrainian resistance.

Plans for the Use of Sanctioned Oil

In London, several courses of action are being discussed: the idea is to seize tankers carrying Russian oil and then sell their cargo. The funds obtained from the sale of this sanctioned oil are proposed to be directed directly to aid Ukraine. This will simultaneously weaken the economic potential of the Russian Federation and support the Ukrainian army in its war against the aggressor.

“This will have a dual impact on the Russian military machine – we will not only deprive them of illegal military revenues but also find a way to help finance Ukraine’s resistance,” a source noted.

Special Operations and Legal Framework

In light of these initiatives, British special forces are preparing for possible operations to detain vessels belonging to the Russian shadow fleet. The British authorities have already established the legal basis for such actions. In particular, this week two sanctioned tankers – Spring Fortune and Range Vale – are expected to pass through the English Channel. Both vessels, which are carrying oil of Russian origin, are sailing under false flags of Cameroon and Zimbabwe. This makes them potential targets for operations by London. At the same time, allies are also tracking the movements of other sanctioned vessels from the Russian Federation.
