In September 2025, there is a significant increase in sunflower oil prices both in Ukraine and in the European market. The main reason for the price hike has been the prolonged drought and hot summer, which negatively affected the yield and production volumes of sunflowers.

Impact of Drought on Sunflower Yield
In the southern regions of Ukraine, where the main sunflower planting areas are concentrated, this year’s yield has been lower than the average for the past five years. A similar situation has occurred in the European Union, where farmers have also faced a lack of rainfall during the cultivation of this crop. According to preliminary estimates by experts, the sunflower harvest in Europe may be the worst in the last decade, amounting to about 8.3 million tons.
“Prices of sunflower oil are rising, as Ukraine and the EU together account for about 40% of global sunflower production. The price index for vegetable oils has reached its highest level since July 2022. Some relief may come with the progress of the harvest and an increase in supplies.”
Market Dynamics and Prospects
Record prices for sunflower oil have been recorded in French ports since November 2022. In Ukraine, this figure has approached a five-month high. Since Ukraine and EU countries together account for about 40% of global sunflower production, the reduction in supply in this market has significantly impacted prices worldwide.
Despite the negative effects of the drought on sunflowers, the situation with the corn harvest looks more optimistic. Experts from the analytical company ARGUS Media note that summer rainfall in certain regions of Ukraine has positively influenced the upcoming corn harvest, which is projected to be at 31.3 million tons, with a potential export of 26 million tons.
