Vanguard Acquired Stake in Strategy Through Index Funds

Vanguard, long known for its passive investment approach, has become the primary shareholder of Strategy. To date, the company owns over 20 million Class A common shares of MSTR, which constitutes about 8% of their total. The estimated value of this stake exceeds $9.2 billion.

Ownership of Strategy shares was made possible through Vanguard’s indexing strategies. Many of its funds, such as VITSX, VIEIX, and VUG, automatically add Strategy securities to their portfolios, tracking key benchmarks. This occurred despite the company’s skeptical stance on cryptocurrencies, as Vanguard has repeatedly emphasized that it does not support the launch of a Bitcoin ETF and does not plan to trade cryptocurrency products on its platform.

The Impact of Cryptocurrencies on Traditional Financial Institutions

Since 2020, Strategy has been pursuing an active Bitcoin accumulation policy, financing this through stock and bond issuances. During this time, Strategy has concentrated over 600,000 BTC on its balance sheet and has become the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin in the world. The company’s founder, Michael Saylor, owns nearly 20 million shares of Strategy.

Despite its critical stance on cryptocurrencies, Vanguard, through its passive investment structure, has provided millions of clients with indirect access to the crypto market. Notably, the rapid growth of Strategy’s shares—over 850% in the last two years—has yielded significant profits for Vanguard shareholders. This illustrates how deeply digital assets have already integrated into the portfolios of traditional investors.

“While the company’s investment in Strategy is not a conscious bet, it illustrates how deeply digital assets have penetrated traditional financial structures, analysts believe.”

Experts note that Vanguard’s case is not unique: the company has become the largest shareholder in nearly 400 companies within the S&P 500 through its indexing strategy.

Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas pointed out that there are parallels between the approaches of Strategy and Vanguard: both companies focus on long-term asset ownership and do not engage in active selling, maintaining investments even amid market fluctuations.

Previously, Strategy reported over $14 billion in unrealized profit in the second quarter of 2025.
