Gas prices in Russia hit record high after drone attacks on oil refineries

Україна залишила РФ без пального: ціни на бензин злетіли після зупинки низки НПЗ.

Following a series of attacks by Ukrainian drones on Russia’s oil refining facilities, there has been a sharp increase in gasoline and diesel prices in the domestic market of the Russian Federation. The latest incidents occurred at the Novokuibyshevsk Oil Refinery of Rosneft, which has completely halted oil processing since August 2. Prior to the attack, this refinery processed approximately 18,000 tons of oil daily.

Scale of losses and record fuel prices

In addition to the Novokuibyshevsk refinery, the largest refinery in Russia, the Ryazan Oil Refinery, has also suffered significant damage. Due to damage from the drone attacks, half of its production capacity had to be shut down. This marked the first large-scale strike by Ukrainian drones on major Russian refineries since March 2025. Estimates suggest that daily oil processing losses at Russian enterprises could reach 40,000 tons, and recovery may take from one month to six months.

“Prices for A-95 gasoline on the St. Petersburg International Commodity Exchange surged to ₽77,000 or $964.6 per ton on August 4, setting a new historical high, surpassing the previous record of ₽76,900.”

At the same time, the price of A-92 gasoline increased by 1.2% to ₽66,640 per ton, while diesel fuel rose by 0.5% to ₽58,130 per ton. To stabilize the situation, Russian oil companies are forced to redirect additional volumes of production to the domestic market, reducing exports.

Increased pressure: new strikes on infrastructure

Ukrainian forces continue to strike at the oil and gas infrastructure of the Russian Federation. On August 4, a drone attack was recorded on the Rosneft-Kubannefteproduct oil depot in the Adler area, indicating further escalation of pressure on the energy sector of the aggressor country.
