The European Commission has announced its intention to create a network of artificial intelligence (AI) gigafactories, marking a significant step in the EU’s strategy to enhance its competitiveness against China and the US. Brussels plans to build five new data centers, each equipped with 100,000 chips, which is four times the capacity of current production facilities.

AI Development Strategy in the EU
The action plan also includes the establishment of centralized data laboratories where companies can securely train their models on large datasets. This will allow for the scaling of European AI solutions without the risk of violating strict personal data protection requirements. The EU will also launch a new support service to assist companies in adapting to AI legislation.
Investments in the Future of Technology
A key aspect of this project is attracting private investments. Investors have already pledged to allocate €150 billion, with an additional €20 billion earmarked for the construction of the five AI gigafactories from a fund specifically created for this purpose. Overall, the EU plans to attract over €200 billion in the coming years to implement its ambitious plans.
The public infrastructure will be developed within the framework of public-private partnerships, allowing companies that have expressed interest in response to the European Commission’s call to participate in these projects. Each of these steps aims to ensure the EU’s competitiveness in a global context, especially in light of the rapid technological advancements in the US and China.
“The goal is to triple computing power and attract private investments.”
It is also worth noting that nine AI startups from the US have raised over $100 million each since the beginning of the year, indicating strong interest in innovations in this field.
