EU May Impose 30% Tariff on American Goods Worth €100 Billion

ЄС готується накласти мита на американські товари вартістю близько €100 млрд у разі провалу торгівельних перемовин зі США.

The European Union is considering the possibility of imposing a 30% tariff on American goods totaling around €100 billion if negotiations with the United States regarding trade end without results, and U.S. President Donald Trump implements his intention to introduce tariffs on most goods from the EU after August 1.

Package of Measures and Key Areas of Impact

As part of the first wave of countermeasures, the European Union plans to combine an already approved list of tariffs on American goods worth €21 billion with a previously proposed list of an additional €72 billion. This results in a single package that primarily covers industrial products, including Boeing aircraft, cars from the U.S., and bourbon. All these goods could be subject to a 30% tariff, which corresponds to the rate that the U.S. plans to apply to European goods.

“Tariffs will be ready for implementation by August, but only in the event of failed negotiations and the actual imposition of tariffs by the U.S.”

Additional Restrictions Against the U.S.

The EU’s plans for such measures have emerged against the backdrop of Washington’s increasingly tough stance in trade negotiations. This has compelled European capitals, particularly Berlin, to adopt a more decisive position in response to potential trade restrictions. In addition to tariffs, in the event of a failed agreement, the European Union is also considering the possibility of imposing taxes on American technology corporations, restricting investments from the U.S., or partially limiting American companies’ access to the European market.
